| BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA, EDITOR, ADI-DANKA (FIRST EVER PUNJABI & URDU DALIT WEEKLIES!) -AN INTERVIEW BY: C.L. CHUMBER CL_CHUMBER@YAHOOMAIL.COM | |
We first of all published Baba Ram Chand Kherha’s interview (Baba Muggowalia’s son late Mr. Chatar Sain Muggowalia P.C.S. was accompanied by me) in our Punjabi monthly magazine “Kaumi Udarian”‘s Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia’s special birth centenary issue, January, 1986. When I as resident editor of Sahib Kanshi Ram’s Punjabi weekly “Bahujan Samaj Bulletin” decided to publish special issue on Baba Muggowalia of its 12th January 1997 issue, one of my advisers suggested interviewing Baba Kherha Ji. Sahib Kanshi Ram in his speeches felt proud of declaring the Bahujan Samaj Bulletin his Adi-Danka.
We immediately rushed to Baba Kherha Ji’s house, 50 kms away on 11 th January 1997 at 9:00p.m. I was accompanied by M/S Chaman Lal Sahni “Kherha”, Gurmit Chand Sampla “Sofi Pind,” Kishan Lal Ahir “Kukkar Pind,” Joginder Paul Johari “Pharwala,” Vijay Kumar Lallian, Ashok Kumar “Ibrahim Basti” Nawan Shahar, Prem Kumar Chumber and Kumarjiv Chumber (my younger brother and my elder son) and driver late Shahid Mr. Sushil Kumar Verma (R/O village Bohan Tehsil and District Hoshiarpur). I presented a copy of Dr. Mark Juergensmeyer’s book “Religious Rebels in Punjab” to Baba Kherha Ji. We enjoyed Baba Kherha Ji’s company. We were sad on his weeping remembering district Ferozepur`s Baba Jhagarhu Ram and Baba Bararhu Ram two Adi-Dharami martyrs of Census 1931 AD. Sometimes it also saddens me to think of my two friends Sushil Kumar Verma and Ashwani Kumar “Shammi” Valmikan of Ali Mohalla, JalandharCity who lost their lives on 7 th February, 1997 at Phagwara by a plotted road accident. I dedicate this English version to both martyrs!!
Baba Muggowalia Ji, Baba Kherha Ji and their missionary friend Baba Telu Ram “Khawaspuri”‘S Grand Son Sahib Kanshi Ram are no more but they are now the shinning stars of the biggest ever war fought in the world against the Indo-Aryans. The untouchables are now struggling hard to rule the biggest ever democrate country to establish the Be-gam Pura an ideal state concept! We are proud of them and their honest and dedicated Lieutenants!!! - C.L. Chumber.

C.L CHUMBER: Baba Ram Chand Kherha Ji! Where and when was your good self born?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA JI: I was born on 15th Oct., 1902 at my mother’s parental village BINJO Tehsil Garhshankar Distt. Hoshiarpur, Punjab. My father’s name was Thekedar Inder Ram and my mother’s name was Mrs. Basanti @ Santi. My ancestral village is Kherha near village Paaldi Block Mahilpur, Tehsil Garhshankar District Hoshiarpur (Punjab). My father Thekedar Inder Ram and my uncle Mr. Nikka Ram Kherha migrated to New Zealand for employment in 1914 AD. My father died in 1969 AD.
C.L. CHUMBER: Please tell us about your education?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA JI: I was admitted in the private school of Sant Nand Singh of our village .Sant Nand Singh being Jatt caste followed the Sikh philosophy (religion) but he hated me ( being untouchable caste fellow ) even when he teached me a lesson. When ever he distribute KARHAH PARSHAD (consecrate ) in his Dera (Religious Place ), he used to throw away in my hands .When ever a low caste man or woman donated coins , he first of all rubbed with his foot on the soil and then he kept that coins separate from the coins of upper caste persons . I am to say that even the Sikh religious persons hated us extremely!
C .L. CHUMBER: Baba Ram Chand Kherha Ji! Please tell us some incidents of untouchability in your childhood time?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA JI: Yes, this is the story that once I went out at the call of the nature and I washed my hands at a farmer `s well. At once Mr. Fumman Singh (farmer) who was a Mahton Sikh by caste, slashed 5-7 times a rope made from straw on my back and abused me. He said that I had polluted his well. Then I was a student of 2nd class, when an examiner Inspector (Babu) came for our examination. He asked to solve a mathematics question that a trader purchased 19 caps at the rate of one and a quarter aana and he handed over Rs. one and half to the shopkeeper. How much money the shopkeeper had to return?
At that time, there were the multiplication tables of half, three fourth, one and a quarter times, one and a half times and two and half times. We in the second class used to solve the questions of gold and silver.
Then there were the slates and wooden tablets not the exercise books. I solved the question and put my slate downward separately. The other students also solved the question and put the slates under one another in a heap. The inspector babu asked whose slate is this. I stood up and said that this is mine. He called me nearby himself. At that time, there was Mr. Fumman Singh who beaten me by ropes made from straw before, he cautioned the Inspector that I was the Chamar caste fellow. Inspector babu said that the heap of slates must be broken by bricks and whom you discard by saying Chamar that Chamar student had flushed out you all the Rajputs. He awarded me with RS. 25/-. My maternal grandfather was also in the school who handed over RS. 25/- also and asked the school staff to distribute the sweets amounting RS 50/- . Then I complained to the inspector babu that these Rajput Sikhs people did not allow us washing our wooden tablets. Then a Musalman Munshi of police station asked me to complain .We handed over the complaint. The police officer came in our village. All villagers gathered, all the Rajput (Mehton) community realized their faults and begged pardon from us in the village gathering!
Then the inspector babu ji ordered that as long as this student would study in this school, he would be monitor of his class! After this no one dared to treat me as an untouchable! Then the Mehton (Rajput) Sikh caste ladies come to my house to urge me that I should guide their children in study. They used to gift me jiggery, sugarcane and many other eatables and urged me to teach their children. I did my primary education at my maternal village Binjo’s school and then I studied up to 9 th class at D.A.V. school, Mahilpur district Hoshiarpur. My father was in New Zealand. My mother Mrs. Basanti @ Santi was in India. She was very much delighted when I compelled the Mehton community to say sorry. She used to say me that I should not bother any body. She used to applaud me.
C. L. CHUMBER: When were you married? How many have you children?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: Long ago, there was a custom to marry the children. I was also married when I was nine years old. My wife was seven years old at that time. My wife’s second ceremonial visit (Muklawa) to our home was when I was 18 years old. We have four sons and two daughters. My wife’s name was Mrs. Ishari and she fully co-operated with me in every field.
C. L. CHUMBER: When did you first ever meet Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia ji Maharaj?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: I first ever met Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia in the Adi-Dharam foundation function on 11-12 June, 1926 at his ancestral village Muggowal District Hoshiarpur.
C. L. CHUMBER: First of all, please tell us from where your good self came to know about the Adi-Dharam conference held at village Muggowal?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: At that time, Baba Muggowalia published the posters of the function which we distributed by hand and pasted on the walls in villages and towns.
C .L CHUMBER: What was discussed in this Adi-Dharam function?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia told in his speech that the watchman registered us as Hindu in the register of birth and death but the Hindus did not allow us to touch them. He said that we had no right in India .
Again Baba Muggowalia said that the government job was a distance issue. We were not even appointed as the watchman. The Hindus were also looting our right of our Adi-Dharam nation. We were compelled to do the bonded labour of loading. The landlords treated us as slaves. He (Baba Muggowalia) continued to say that we were the Adi-Dharamis and the aboriginals of the India. The Hindus (Brahman, Kshattriya and Vaishya .Sahib Kanshi Ram also followed the Adi-ism – Chumber) were the foreigner Aryans. (Baba Muggowalia in his Adi-Dharam Mandal report 1931 wrote the 20 resolutions passed in the first ever Adi-Dharam Mandal’s Function at village Muggowal. He also wrote the fundamental principles of Adi-Dharam, twelve duties of Adi-Dharami organizations, fifty six duties of the Adi-Dharamis in the report which covers the period of January 1926 to April 1931 – C.L. Chumber)
C. L. CHUMBER: Please enlighten us in details regarding the bounded labour of loading (Boja-Begar)?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: When ever a police constable or any other government officials visited the village, we Chuhra-Chamar people had to carry his bed etc. luggage 10-12 miles away to his destination. When ever the police officer visited the village, we had to reap the grass for his horse. We had to carry the dead body of a person killed in a dispute to the district head quarters. In the Kangra’s (now in Himachal Pradesh state) hilly area, we had to carry on the Palanquin. When the bride went with marriage party, then the large kettle-drum was put on our man’s back and the Hindus beat that large kettle-drum loudly.
C. L. CHUMBER: Please enlight us in details how the Adi-Dharamis were dealt as Sub-human beings?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: The non Adi-Dharamis did not permit a foreign returned Adi-Dharami to build a brick building the in the village Langeri near Mahil Pur town of district Hoshiarpur. When he built the brick building, then the non Adi-Dharamis did not permit him to build the double story. There was a court case and we won. Then the daring Adi-Dharami fellow built the three story’s building.
When we dug the wells, construct the walls with the bricks, construct the circular wooden base on which wall of well is erected, we made a contraption consisting of a large leather bucket but when the well was ready to use, the Sikh Jatts sprinkled the Ganges-water in the well to purify the water of the well which they thought was polluted by our touch. (That is why they are the second class Hindus in the Guise of Sikhs!).
If an untouchable jumped over the rope to draw water from the well, they (Jatt Sikhs) thought that the water of the well was polluted and they sprinkled the ganges-water to purify it. And they did beat the untouchable to make him half-dead.
They (Jatt Sikhs) draw water from the well by a vessel then they pour it into a small size pitcher like vessel. Then they again pour water from the vessel into the small earthen pitcher. Then they pour it through the out let of a cactus plant to reach our double palmful ! In the hotels, there were separate utensils for us; it did not matter whether the dogs and cats licked our utensils. If any untouchable joined a marriage party of touchables as a menial working for sutomaru payment , he had to stay nights at the residence of untouchables of that village for many days (as there was a marriage ceremony for 3-4 days in those days – Chumber). He was not even allowed to sit with the marriage party for dinning. Our lives were worst than a hell ! This is due to the kindness of our Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia that we have progressed so much.
C.L. CHUMBER: Who was the first editor of the “Adi-Danka” weekly?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia was the first editor of the Adi-Danka. Then he appointed me as the editor and Baba Sant Ram Azad (of village Nangal Shahidaan near Hoshiarpur on Garhshankar Road. He left Sikhism -Chumber) as sub editor in 1928 AD and the Adi-Danka was closed in 1951 AD
C.L. CHUMBER: In which language the Adi-Danka was published?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: The Adi-Danka was a Punjabi weekly in the beginning. Then the Adi-Danka weekly launched in Urdu language in 1930 AD. The Punjabi and Urdu version of the Adi-Danka weeklies were posted on every Tuesday.
C.L. CHUMBER: will your good self enlight us the names of famous poets of the Adi-Danka?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia, Sant Ram Azad, Sant Ram Bham, Dhanna Singh Langeri, Sansar Chand "Adi " Muggowalia, Bhagat Ram Diwana Mandhali, Gurdass Ram Alam, Sant Gopal Dass Langeri, Charan Singh Safari, Chanan Lal Manak, Sangu Ram Sund “Rai Pur Dabba,”( New Zealand ), Pandit Bakhshi Ram . We published the poems of the poets in “The Adi-Dukharhe” (sorrows of the aboriginal Indians).
C.L. CHUMBER: Please enlight us a specimen of Baba Muggowalia’s poetry?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: In 1926 AD, the poem in the Adi-Dharam Mandal’s poster was written by Baba Muggowalia. (We republished it in the Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia 99 th Birth Anniversary Souvenir 1985,again in the Kaumi Udarian ‘s Baba Muggowalia birth centenary special issue January, 1986 both published by myself and in Sahib Kanshi Ram’s Punjabi weekly “Bahujan Samaj Bulletin” ‘s Baba Muggowalia special issue dated 12 th January, 1997. I C.L. Chumber was its resident editor. ).There is a specimen of his poetry which I like to recite: -
“Adi-Dharami people! ”Please listen to me with care, to know why our nation is so much down to earth. We people are wandering like animals, thousands years had passed, we are in trauma. The Hindus are not our protectors, because they saw a blot of poverty on our foreheads. The poverty had broken our neck, by pulling the carcasses, our lower end of back bone red dished. My friends by weeding with numerous agriculturist Jatts, our knees build clumsy by doing weeding in the crops. Our people developed the thought of begging, our hands act niggardly due to our harvesting. I Mangu Ram warn you to be vigilant; otherwise you will be worst to others! "
There was a spasmodic pain and reality in the poetry of Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia! Especially Baba Muggowalia wrote poetry in others names and he mentioned his name very occasionally There was his another famous poem”Hindu di gau raksha - Hindu’s cow protection ". Which I also want to recite: -
“Dear brothers! Listen the kindness of the Hindus – 2 they say mother-cow when they drink milk, when the same cow dies, they discard her! "
C.L.CHUMBER: Will your good self enlight us on the Simon Commission?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: The Congress Party demanded the Sawraj (Home Rule), the British Government appointed a commission from London under the chairmanship of Sir Johan Simon to know whether the India needed independence or not? In October, 1928, when the Simon Commission visited Lahore, ten thousands Adi-Dharamis bearing red turbans, the red flags in hands and red belts around theirs waists went there. There was inscribed "Adi-Dharam Mandal "on the belts. ( One such belt was bestowed to me by revered Baba Muggowalia on 12th Oct.,1979 , when I left the job as the Tehsil Welfare Officer for the common cause at the age of 21 years ! ) . There was a ban on us wearing the red color. In the Lahore (Greater Punjab’s capital city, now in Pakistan) area, more than ten thousands Adi-Dharami brick-makers came with red turbans, wearing the red belts and red flags with sticks in theirs hands .The brick -makers of Lahore arranged the meals for all!
Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia said (to the Simon Commission) that we were not Hindus, we were Adi-Dharamis. We must be given rights proportionate to our population. India is not (now) capable for the Independence. If India is declared independent (now), then our share must be given to us. Dr. Ambedkar (Dr. Ambawdekar whose name his Brahman teacher Mr. Ambedkar changed! - C. L. Chumber) was also there with the Simon Commission, Lala Lajpat Rai was a leader of the Congress Party as well as The Arya Samaj. And he tried his best to stop our people forcibly so that our people should not meet the Simon Commission. That is why the police had to lathi charge on them. Lala Lajpat Rai `s stand was that if the untouchables (Adi-Dharamis) were separated from the Hindus, there would be a big loss to the Hindus! After many days, Lala Lajpat Rai died due to cardiac arrest, (I read the same in a paper of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya preserved in the National Archive, New Delhi. I noted the contents, name and date of the paper in my diary which will be published in due course - C.L. Chumber).
C. L. CHUMBER: Please enlight us about the Lothian Committee (Franchise Committee)?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: The Lothian Committee was also addressed by Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia .Baba Hazara Ram Pipplanwalia ( Gen. Sec. Adi-Dharam Mandal) wrote in details regarding the Lothian Committee in his article “the Adi-Dharam Mandal and the Lothian Committee." (We published it in the Kaumi Udarian `s Baba Muggowalia special Birth Centenary issue, January,1986 and again in Sahib Kanshi Ram’s The Bahujan Samaj Bulletin weekly dated 22nd December,1996 .The Punjabi readers can visit http://www.ambedkartimes.org . The English version will be available in the first week of October, 2008 on Baba Hazara Ram Piplanwalia`s birth day! - C. L. Chumber).
C.L. CHUMBER: Please enlight us about the census 1931 AD?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: In that year Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia was 45 years old having marvelous qualities of leadership. He got recognized that the Adi-Dharam in the census of 1931 AD from the British Government!!! (Dr. Ambedkar also appreciated Baba Muggowalia’s efforts to got recognition of the Adi-Dharam. We reproduced his writing from the book “Source Material on Baba Saheb Dr. Ambedkar" published by Maharashtra Govt. in the first ever souvenir on Baba Muggowalia in 1985! PLEASE VISIT http://ambedkartimes.com – C.L. Chumber). And our people also registered themselves as Adi-Dharamis openly with daring spirit! The Hindus and Sikhs jointly created barriers to stop our legitimate movements. They did stop our people to move in the fields for call of the nature and to scrape the earth for grass. In nut shell, they made our lives hell .In Ferozepur District, our two brothers named Baba Jhagarhu Ram and Baba Bararhu Ram were burnt alive for recording themselves as Adi-Dharamis in the Census! (There was a tear burst in abundant in the eyes of Baba Kherha Ji.) .Even the children recited: - “Leave the quarrels, do color the turban as red, be vigorous, do not leave the Adi-Dharam!” (Chad jhagrha , ranga lai lal pagrha, dharam nu nahin chhaddana , ho tagarha ! -in Punjabi )
C.L.CHUMBER: BABA MUGGOWALIA ALSO SAT ON FAST-UNTO-DEATH to counter Mr. Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi `s fast-unto-death against untouchables rights in the Communal Award! Please enlight our readers about his fast-unto-death also?
BABA RAM CHAND KHERHA: When Mr. Gandhi Ji came to know that the untouchables were recognized as a separate nation like the Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims and Christians in the Communal Award announced by the British Government head quarters at London on 18th August, 1932, he did slyness. And he (Gandhi Ji) sat on fast-unto-death only against the untouchables rights in the Yervada prison at Poona (now Pune in Maharashtra). Baba Mangu Ram Muggowalia was in Simla at that time.(Simla was in Punjab and was the summer capital of India at that time, now the capital of Himachal Pradesh –C.L. Chumber). He (Baba Muggowalia) warned the British government not to surrender to Mr. Gandhi `s demands. Baba Muggowalia dared to announce his fast--unto-death for theirs legitimate rights. He started his fast-unto-death at JalandharCity (The Adi-Dharam Mandal’s head quarter was at JalandharCity, Punjab). The Hindus threatened Dr. Ambedkar. The society was not so much ready. That is why Dr. Ambedkar was compelled to sign a pact with Mr. Gandhi. Baba Muggowalia telephoned Dr. Ambedkar that you should not surrender to the Hindus. Dr. Ambedkar said that he was compelled to sign the Poona Pact. We lost more than the rights we got in the Poona Pact! ( Later on in 1945 AD , Dr. Ambedkar denounced the Poona Pact in his marvelous book " What Congress and Gandhi had done to the untouchables .He wrote a chapter " Poona Pact-A Mean Deal " which will you watch on http://www.ambedkartimes.com&org on 24th Sept ., 2008 - Poona Pact Day. Sahib Kanshi Ram started his political activities by starting a march from Pune to denounce Poona Pact in a big rally on 24th Sept., 1982 at JalandharCity. He wrote in details in his book " The Chamcha Age-An Era of the Stooges " which will be available on http://www.ambedkartimes.com & org on his 2nd death anniversary 8th October,2008 - Chumber ) .Gandhi’s fast-unto-death was only for four to five days but Baba Muggowalia’s fast-unto-death against Mr. Gandhi continued for three weeks. There were no seats reserved for Punjab untouchables. Baba Muggowalia’s fast-unto-death continued till the Punjabi untouchables got the rights!
.
